Welcome to Weston Intermediate School. WIS prides itself on being a caring community of learners that fosters pride in each student’s developing abilities while promoting social development. We are dedicated to helping each child succeed academically, socially and emotionally and to meeting the individual needs of all our students.
Our teachers use a variety of innovative instructional approaches such as Workshop to instill a love of learning and build confident, competent students. This approach naturally differentiates the learning for all students, to meet their individual needs, and to challenge each child to be their best. Our goal is not only to promote literacy, but more importantly, to inspire our students to read and write as part of daily life. Through hands-on learning, visualization, and pictorial representations, our students build their understanding, confidence, and love of math. Across all content areas we focus on enhancing students’ ability to think critically and creatively, to be innovative problem solvers and proficient communicators, and to speak and write effectively and clearly; skills that will help them become truly successful in this 21 st century.
WIS students also have a wealth of programs that we believe will enrich their appreciation of the arts, music, physical well-being, science, and sports. Students can participate in a variety of performing ensembles including chorus, band, and orchestra, as well as a school musical that has drawn over 100 students to the stage. Each student is given access to their own Chromebook, and participates in a variety of STEM and Makerspace activities.
As we teach our students how to become successful citizens, they learn that we do not tolerate bullying or discrimination at any level on the school grounds, the bus, or any school related activity, nor do we look the other way. Through Responsive Classroom and our work with RULER, an acronym for the five skills of emotional intelligence (recognizing, understanding, labeling, expressing, and regulating) we teach our students to be kind, to act responsibly, and to treat each other with respect. As a school community we focus on PRIDE, which stands for Personal Accountability, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Effort. We want our students to feel safe, and for all of us – students, teachers, and families, to take pride in all we do each day.
We believe that a strong school and family partnership is essential. At WIS we are fortunate to have a strong, active PTO and we encourage all parents to participate. I also urge you to take an active part in what your child is required to do at home and to support independent reading. The road to a successful adulthood starts early. We strive every day to make sure that while the path may not be easy at times, what is learned at WIS will inspire a student in striving to do the best work possible at every stage.

Assistant Principal's Message
Welcome to WIS! My name is Nicole Wilhelm and I have been the Assistant Principal here since 2013. I have 2 children, Tyler and Emily, who are in 6th and 4th grade respectively. Prior to coming to Weston, I taught 2nd and 4th grade and was a Reading Specialist at K-5 schools in Westport. I have been in education since 2002 when I graduated from Southern Connecticut State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education and a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology. Since then I have received a Masters Degree in Remedial Reading at Teachers College, Columbia University and my Administrative Certification from Sacred Heart University. It has been my pleasure joining the Weston team and I continue to learn and grow alongside this amazing group of educators.
At WIS we consider ourselves a family. We focus on academic excellence as well as the social and emotional well being of our students. We have designed our day and adopted many ways to ensure that students are supported and challenged in all academic areas while also being supported in their social and emotional growth. We ensure that the students have opportunities to problem solve, persevere, collaborate and communicate effectively. We use strategies from the Responsive Classroom approach, Emotional Intelligence work from Yale, and DBT. We work to help students (and staff) name their emotions and develop strategies to regulate their emotions so that they are ready and available for learning. We strive to help all students achieve their full potential. We work closely with our families as partners to ensure we are always considering the whole child and supporting our students as they reach their goals.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the hours for students?
Where is the parent drop off and pick up area?
Parent drop off and pick up occurs in front of the building in our car loop. In the morning, drop off begins at 8:20, unless your child is participating in a before school activity. As cars pull up and stop, students from the first six cars should exit and enter the school. In the afternoon, we follow the same procedure. If you do want to park your car, please plan to be at the school by 2:50. After that time, we close off the parking area to simplify the traffic flow at the end of the day.
What if my child's dismissal plans change?
Please be sure that your child knows of his or her dismissal plans before the school day begins, as well as back-up plans in the event of inclement weather. Dismissal plans need to be entered into our Dismissal Manager prior to 1:00 p.m. and can be done up to two weeks in advance. Please refrain from calling the office for dismissal changes. Changes will be accepted by phone only in cases of emergency.
What are the office hours?
The office is open from 8:00 am until 4:00 pm.
I have academic concerns for my child, or, I am concerned about something I heard that happened on the playground, who do I contact?
The first point of contact for concerns regarding your child’s academics or other school related issues should be the classroom teacher. The classroom teacher has the most frequent contact with your child and should be able to work with you on the issue. On occasion, the teacher may want to involve the principal or assistant principal, or members of our mental health team.
I have a concern about something that happened on the bus, who do I contact?
In the case of bus issues, please contact the assistant principal.
