Dear Weston Public Schools Community,
I am writing to provide a comprehensive update regarding the incident that occurred earlier today at Weston High School. As shared in previous communications, an unsubstantiated threat prompted an early dismissal of high school students and a coordinated response to ensure the safety of our entire school community. I would like to take this opportunity to synthesize the information we shared earlier and provide additional details regarding our ongoing efforts.
Earlier today, the Weston, Massachusetts Police Department contacted the Weston, Connecticut Police Department to inform them of a threat made on social media targeting Weston High School. Upon further review of the social media post, it was determined that the threat was directed at Weston High School in Connecticut, as specific staff from our school was identified. This prompted an immediate and thorough response by law enforcement and district officials. Weston Police Chief Henion was in contact with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).
The decision to evacuate Weston High School and enact early dismissal procedures was made out of an abundance of caution. These actions were taken in coordination with the Weston Police Department and in alignment with our established safety protocols. Students and staff were temporarily relocated to Weston Middle School, and dismissal proceeded smoothly thanks to the coordination of school staff, the transportation team, and the cooperation of students and families.
The Weston Police Department and bomb squad units from our neighboring municipalities thoroughly searched the school and its surrounding area. The building has been deemed safe, and there is no evidence to suggest any danger to students or staff. This evening the school will be open for the scheduled WMS play practice, and WHS athletic practices and games.
We take this situation very seriously and remain committed to ensuring the safety and well-being of everyone in our school community. The collaboration with the Weston Police Department, neighboring municipalities, and federal authorities underscores the seriousness with which this matter is being handled. This is an ongoing criminal investigation, and the Weston Police Department is working to identify potential suspects.
We understand that situations like this can cause concern and anxiety among students, staff, and families. Please rest assured that the district is working diligently with law enforcement agencies to monitor and address any potential threats. I want to express my deepest gratitude to the Weston Police Department, the bomb squad units, and the FBI for their swift response and unwavering commitment to our community’s safety. I also want to thank our students, staff, and families for their patience, cooperation, and trust as we navigated this challenging situation.
As always, your child’s safety is our top priority. We are confident that the buildings are safe for all students, staff, and visitors to occupy. We will continue to work closely with law enforcement and communicate any new developments as they arise.
Thank you for your continued support and understanding.
Sincerely,
Lisa Barbiero
