Dear Weston Families,
We are writing to you tonight, once again, full of sadness and frustration. We need to let you know that another swastika was found on Tuesday evening, March 18, in the boys’ locker room for the public pool located in Weston Middle School. The administration engaged the Weston police as soon as this was reported, and school and police investigations are underway. This horrific symbol of hate has been removed, and we will provide more detailed information as soon as possible.
We heard and understand the hurt, anger, and fear expressed during Monday night’s board meeting by members of our school community. We know we must never allow antisemitism to take root in our schools.
These recent incidents are not the first we’ve experienced. While our administrators have taken care to investigate, respond to, and help prevent incidents of antisemitism, the times we are in demand even more of us -- as leaders and as a community.
Clearly there is more work we need to do. We have reached out to local rabbis, the Connecticut office of the ADL, and other key experts to help us develop an immediate and long-term action plan. The plan will include elements focused on preventing acts of antisemitism and hate through education and building a culture of understanding. It will also include work to enhance the ways we respond following an incident so that our students and the entire community feel safe and respected. Throughout this process we will be listening and learning to identify and develop the approaches and solutions that the Weston school community deserves.
We are reaffirming our commitment that all students must feel welcome and safe in our schools. We are deeply committed to this work and, together, we will take action.
Sincerely,
Steven Ezzes, Board Chairman
